Classwork & Homework: English 10 G & H – Unit 1

As we move into the final weeks of our first unit, The Short Story, we have some projects coming up that you should be aware of. First, as a reminder, the final test on the Fiction Literary Terms will be in two weeks and will be fill-in-the-blank. Next, we have an ongoing project that will begin in our first class of next week. This project will place you in groups for Socratic Seminars (more on this in class, of course). You will choose two stories to read over the two weeks for discussion as a group. Each week, half of the group will prepare a single question for a short discussion of 3-4 minutes. Each seminar leader should be prepared to follow up their question, to listen and expand upon the ideas of their group mates with the goal of digging deeply into the meaning of their chosen story. The document with guidelines, preparation materials, and a rubric may be found here. The major assessment for this unit is also a cornerstone assessment for this semester – a narrative essay of your own. Please review the project handout for discussion in class next week. In short, you will write a brief essay based on a personal experience in order to teach a lesson or make a point. I look forward to two productive weeks ahead of us!
